Standard NTSC programming comes in on 480 lines with 720 pixels per line while PAL (european system) provides 576 lines. Both of these standard formats offer approximately 0.3 megapixels of resolution. HD is defined as 1 megapixel or higher resolution. When you go shopping for HDTV, you will notice that most TV sets support only 720 lines which would refer to 1280x720 resolution. There are few sets that support full resolution of 1920x1080. Just doing the simple math, 1080 offers twice the resolution of 720 system. If you cannot afford to buy 1080p set at this time then do not waste your money on 720.
