Many of the Internet protocols have been originated in old days where automated software was not always available. The geeks of old used to send emails directly using telnet. For that reason the SMTP protocol included text based responses. The communications between your email server and recipient lies mostly hidden but every now and then, if you are like me and are looking, you may find a humorous email server.
