why should I avoid unlimited hosting plans

Most webhosting services suck. If it sounds too good to be true then it surely is. Web hosting can be free or on a cheap side where you end up on some multihomed server with hundreds of domains (thanks to the "unlimited" hosting plans). The machines were just not made to serve so many requests and bandwith is usually limited. If you pay a little more you will get most likely a virtual machine, and again sharing resources with many other people.

Do not let them confuse you into buying a crappy hosting plan. If it says virtual then it is a virtual server even if some companies call it "virtual dedicated server". That's all boloney. If you want a real server, ask for a real server. You can get high quality hosting on TRUE dedicated servers with RAID SCSI 10K RPM or 15K RPM with fully redundant network connectivity on DataCrunch.NET. If you want they can even set up a machine with redundant memory - yes you are reading it right, if a memory chip becames faulty the machine continues running. Of course the machine can take offline faulty cpus or bad network paths while your customers just don't notice. That's how good a hosting can be with the right people.
