The SQL Server 2008 Express Edition was released almost a week ago. However, when you go and download it, you will see that only core installation is available for download. So you figure - I'll go ahead and install the sql server and then i'll download the management studio separately. There is even link to it on the bottom of download page in section what others have downloaded alongside with the software so that makes it easy, you don't have to do it yourself. SQL server 2008 express edition is lying. It says, when installing on base 2008 server, that it requires dot net framework 2.0 service pack 2. Windows 2008 already comes with the dot net framework. The truth is that the install requires dot net 3.5 and installer 4.5 both of which are newer than your out of box 2008 server so you need to go and download them separately.
Took me a little bit to go over all the hurdles of setting up required components. Now it's time to install the server, the installtion goes smoothly but you must modify your firewall to allow connections to the server. You cannot test it with "telnet" because it is no longer included in you 2008 windows. Grr...
After all was set I proceeded to the download only to find out that it actually was management studio 2005. There isn't a management studio 2008 out there yet. So all that and you can't use it... (yeah i know you can always use command line but it's tough to develop databases in command line environment.)
