So I was playing with iSCSI Enterprise Target (ietd) and came up with what I thought was a foolproof set up. It worked great with windows XP, 2000 and 2003 server edition. I bought Windows 2008 server and all went south. I can still see the iSCSI volume but when I try to format, the formatting goes all the way to 100% and then fails. I was looking for any information on why this could be or why it would fail and I have a feeling that it is related to new iSCSI initiator that is built into windows 2008 server. This initiator uses new clustering reserve commands not available on IET.
After much search I have found that there is another project, namely SCST, which originally branched off the IET project and includes stateful support as well as numerous changes and additions to list of supported commands. I will try to replicate my setup with SCST and I will post results in next few days. My hope is that all will work well as SCST already supports, for example, iSCSI based tape device, which by definition is a stateful system (ie you cannot do random access and need to know location of reading heads to calculate movements, or when tape is exchanged, the volumes must be updated to all connected clients). My hope is that with rescan that iSCSI initiator on Windows 2008 server does right after volume completes formatting, will be handled properly.
