In a nod to computer buffs all over that have long cried out for uncoupling of IIS from server line and to allow us to install and run mini websites even from desktop computer, microsoft has now released version of IIS 7 that will run on all mainstream windows editions. There is no legacy support beyond so those of you with XP, you will have to ensure that you have service pack 2 and .NET framework 2.0 installed. There is no support of windows 2000 or ME or any other older version.
For some time now, developers could install personal edition of IIS for development, but with new IIS7, your vista computer will be capable of serving to broader public albeit with limited concurrency.
Basic & Starter Vista with limited securityOn vista basic & starter, certain functionality will not be available due to limited functionality of the operating system and security features. You will miss out on static content, default document (YES, you read that correctly! no default page!!!), directory browsing, ASP, ISAPI filters and CGI execution. All secure certificate related functionality will be missing as well. You will be limited to 3 concurrent requests. FTP services will not be available.
Premium VistaOn premium vista you will get everything you'd expect from server with the exception of certificate related functionality and FTP services. Number of concurrent requests is limited to three as well.
Professional editionOn professional vista you will get full server functionality. All services will be available to you with no limitation, save for 10 concurrent requests.

As with professional vista, you will get all functionality. There is no concurrency limit on this platform.
Development for IISDevelopment for IIS 7.0 is available even in basic or starter edition of vista. Most developers that I know use either Professional or Ultimate vista, so as a developer you will be able to recreate identical setup to your server. Limit of 10 concurrent requests will only come up if you want to stress-test your application. If your code performs well and quickly, on 10 concurrent requests you may be able to serve up to several hundreds of visitors at the same time (remember - person does not take 0 seconds between clicks, most people at least attempt to focus on several words on page before clicking on to another page.)
IIS 7.0 sounds cool, should I upgrade? If you are running 2003 server, you will need service pack 1 installed. If this is a production server you should think twice before proceeding with any beta software installation. Certainly you should not install IIS 7.0 unless you have fully tested your website code to ensure it performs as expected under new version. IIS 7.0 introduces number of changes to the request flow depending on which of the technologies you are using. Blindly upgrading may cause issues.
