The negatives - plasma does not last. It burns quickly and leaves afterburn - that's a ghost image that appears faintly burned in your screen. Plasma gives out heat and costs more than LCD. That is true doubly so if you are looking for 1080 resolution. Plasma tv creates color by combining individual glowing elements.
LCD does not last either. After couple of years the colors become bleak and backlight looses power and diminishes in intensity. Backlight is necessary because unlike plasma, with LCD you get mask that only lets some light out. That is also the reason why black on LCD is really a shade of gray. LCDs tend to be slow on response time leaving feeling of blurred movements.
What are the pros? Lower end LCD is cheap. You can get full resolution LCD much cheaper than Plasma. On the other hand plasma offers quick response time and black on plasma tv actually appears black. Both plasma and LCD can be seen in daylight without a problem but older plasma TVs will be shiny and highly reflective.

If you decide to buy new TV that is not a "closeout sale", chances are that the TV will sport some of the new technologies. Improvements in projection TVs are due to DLP chips which project images using miniature array of adjustable mirrors. These mirrors are capable of producing rich colors with higher light intensity. Plasma TVs now contain better quality fluorescent materials and as long as you do not play static image in first two months, the plasma will burn in evenly and will be less likely to leave ghost images on screen. Plasma TVs used to reflect a lot of sunlight and with new low reflective matte surface, you can enjoy them even with sharp light. LCDs have seen the biggest improvements both in terms of cost and contrast ratio. Newer LCDs now have sub 10ms response time so you can no longer observe motion blur. Some of the new TVs can achieve 20000:1 contrast (white is 20 000 times brighter than "black".) With this contrast, you can get an effective 36 bit color depth with 12 bits per individual color channel. Manufacturers have noticed that as well and you can now get LCDs with 10 bits per channel or more. By some estimates, eye can distinguish up to 500 colors per channel and 10 bits of depth offer twice that amount.
I'm confused, what should I buy then? There really isn't one size fits all. You'll need to go and see for yourself and decide which TV gives you most pleasure. Don't forget to observe TV from an angle so you know what to expect when you install it at home. Some people forget to check and then are surprised at diminished quality once they turn the tv on. Just don't buy 720 and if you can't afford 1080, then wait until you can
