When USB came out in version 1.0, the data transmission rate was 1.5 megabit per second. In revision 1.1, the speed was bumped up to 12 Mbps. With version 2.0 came high speed mode at 480 Mbps. The new standard for USB 3.0 calls for speeds of up to 4.8 gigabits per second. That is more than 10 times the USB 2.0.

How does USB 3.0 compare to other new technologies

Second generation SATA will be running at 3 gigabits per second. Currently there is a new spec from 1394 called FireWire 800, which should support 800 Mbps, which is less than 20% of new USB 3.0 top speed. Technical specification is still being worked out so we do not know whether it will stay true that USB would support twice as many devices as Firewire on one line as it is at this time with USB 2.0 supporting 127 versus 63 devices by firewire. You'll have to wait for USB 3.0 to finalize specs before the production starts, and that is not expected to complete until end of 2008.

High speed ethernet technology does not rely on copper wire because even slight curve or loop will completely destroy quality of signal. High frequency produces very short length waves and at these frequencies, bent wire becomes very efficient antenna. This would dissipate most of the signal. To overcome this problem, majority of high speed wiring is now done in fiber. But is that what they'll use for usb?

Recently, Intel has shown its USB 3.0 prototype to public. While the prototype is functioning, Intel does not expect USB 3.0 to be available until 2009 or 2010. Upon closer inspection of USB 3.0 we can notice that it deploys combination of copper wire and fiber. Essentially, USB 3.0 runs standard high speed USB 2.0 with built in fiber connector for additional speed boost. The USB 3.0 is entirely new connection technology, which maintains USB 1.0/1.1 and 2.0 backwards compatibility.
