Preparing for Microsoft Exchange installation or upgrade may seem like a daunting task so it is best served if you spend a little time addressing following basic points before plunging into the actuall installation:

• critical steps to complete prior to Exchange server installation
• decide whether to upgrade or do a fresh install with data transfer
• review initial configuration settings for optimum performance
• configure logging and tracking so that issues can be reviewed and addressed quickly
• consider installing antivirus to protect agaist worms, viruses, spyware and other threats
• implement encryption to protect email traffic whenever possible
• configure storage limitation to prevent resource overutilization
• consider storage and replication issues

With exchange the important issues are storage, security, antivirus, quotas and tracking. Exchange comes configured with default settings that does not necessarily matches your company size so that would be the other place to look at and tweak.
